The Herxheimer Effect

Also known as the “healing crises,” this reaction is when the body tries to eliminate toxins at a faster rate than they can be properly disposed of. You may feel worse but these reactions are actually signs that the treatment is working and that your body is going through the process of cleaning itself of impurities and toxins.

With any detoxification many of your organs are going to be taxed. In fact, I found that Lyme was only half my problem towards the latter stages. Many of my organs were overburdened.

When any treatment or cleansing program causes a large-scale die off of bacteria, they are released into the body. The more bacteria present, the more endotoxins, and the stronger the cleansing reaction.

The healing crises will bring about past conditions in any order or even new conditions. Some of the symptoms I experienced were extreme fatigue, cramps, headache, aches, pains, arthritic flair up, fever, chills, crazy emotions, mood swings, anxiety and much more.

Tricks and Tips to Easing the Herxheimer Reaction:

  1. Try using activated charcoal.
  2. Drink plenty of water with lemon (for some reason the lemon used to help me).
  3. Symptoms frequently disappear immediately after a bowel movement. If you are having problems, use an enema or look into a coffee enema.
  4. EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique is helpful.
  5. Eat lots of rice! It really does soak up the toxins and is great.
  6. Take an ionic foot bath. This really relieves some of the brain fog and causes there to be a release in your head. When you are doing this make sure you have plenty of minerals.

Tips for You that Helped Me with My Symptoms

TIP 1: I found that sun was great for lessening my symptoms. Wearing sunglasses in the sun was awesome at taking away the fog.

TIP 2: Be careful with who you share your treatments with. I sometimes would tell people what I was doing and they thought I was crazy. Confide in people that understand. You don’t want to second-guess yourself. I sometimes felt like everyone had their own opinion about how to get better. There are so many treatments out there for Lyme disease that it’s hard to know which one will work for you. Trust whatever practitioner you are working with and your intuition and you’ll be fine.

TIP 3: Eating rice really does soak up toxins.

TIP 4: Water with lemon is great!

TIP 5: I found activated charcoal great for lessening symptoms.

TIP 6: You know you are getting better when you are able to go out during the time that has been typically worse for you. What I mean is that my Lyme friends and I had a joke. Some of us were “better” at night and others were “better” or more functional during the day. I was always worse at night but now luckily I’m able to go out at night!

TIP 7: Try to rearrange your furniture every three months or so and incorporate some positive colors into your home. It’s a small thing to do, but every little change gives you a sense of hope and that your life is changing. I remember most days were like groundhogs day. Making these little changes will give you that needed boost that your life is changing for the better!

TIP 8: When your head is hot and you have that flushing feeling, drink some aloe. I bought some on Perry Field’s website which I thought was great.
